The Jetman TEAM
Alternative power
Although electricity services are constantly improving on their services, the demand for
energy is still growing rapidly. Mainly because of an increase in economic development and
population growth. Blackouts could become a household name in the near future. One way
of dealing with this epidemic is to look at alternative power.

Electric Generator Buying Hints - Our Consumer Guide to Purchasing
Generators
Once you have decided to purchase a generator set, there are several considerations you must keep in
mind when choosing which set to buy, where to install it, and how to install it.
This guide will help you make informed decisions during the selection process. Choosing the right machine is
not difficult if you take the time to analyze your requirements carefully. Our JETMAN sales engineering staff is
available to help you with all steps of the generator selection and sizing process.

You will also need to know a few terms and have a basic understanding of the different types of generator
sets and their operating principles. Installation requires expert assistance and a strict adherence to local
codes and regulations.

Stand-By or Prime Power Generators?
You will first need to decide whether you need a stand-by or prime power generator. Simply stated, prime
power is required when you have no other source of power. A stand-by generator is a backup to normal
utility power.
Generator Types & Features
Generator sets produce either single or three-phase power. Choose a single-phase set if your motors are
five horsepower or less. Three-phase power is better for motor starting and running.
Most homeowners will require single phase, whereas industrial or commercial applications usually require
three-phase power. Three-phase generators are set up to produce 231/400 volts. Single-phase sets are 120
or 120/240. Use the low voltage to run domestic appliances and the high voltage for your motors, heaters,
stoves, and dryers.

Gas or Diesel-Powered Generators?
We recommend diesel generators due to their longevity and lower operating costs. Today's modern diesels
are quiet and normally require much less maintenance than comparably sized gas (natural gas or propane)
generators. Fuel costs per kW produced with diesels are normally thirty to fifty percent less than gas units.

1500 rpm water-cooled diesel units operate on average 12-30,000 hours before major maintenance is
required.
1500 rpm water-cooled gas units normally operate 6-10,000 hours because they are built on a light duty
gasoline engine block.

Electric equipment is designed to use power with a fixed frequency: 60 Hertz (Hz) in the United States and
Canada, 50 Hertz in South Africa, China, Asia, Europe and Australia. The frequency output of a generator
depends upon a fixed engine speed.
To produce 50 Hz electricity, most generator engines operate at 1500 or 3600 RPM. Each has its
advantages and drawbacks. At 1500 RPM, four pole sets are the most common and least expensive. They
offer the best balance of noise, efficiency, cost, and engine life. At 3600 RPM, two pole sets are smaller and
lightweight; they are best suited for portable, light-duty applications.
In simple terms it's like operating your car at 120km/h, versus 60km/h, at 60km/h your car will last longer; it is
quieter, requires less maintenance, and has a longer life. Most 3600-rpm units are twin cylinder air-cooled
lawn mower engines, while the water-cooled 1500 rpm units are comparable to those found in forklift and
tractor engines. The 1500-rpm water-cooled units will last longer, offer less maintenance problems, and be
more fuel-efficient.

Features & Benefits to Look for In A Diesel Engine Generator
Engine Block: For long life and quiet operation, we recommend four-cycle, liquid cooled, industrial duty diesel
engines.
Air or Liquid Cooling: Air-cooled engines require a tremendous amount of air and may require ducting. They’
re noisy too. Liquid cooling offers a quieter operation and more even temperature control.

DC electrical system ¡ª A standard 12/24 volt system should include:
Starter motor and battery charging alternator with a solid state voltage regulator
Diesel units should come with a power switch
Safety shutdown system to protect the engine in case of oil pressure loss, generator overspeed or overcrank
and high water temperature

this pace and improve our goals every year with better technology, quality products, client services and support.

Very Important Notes before purchasing a generator.
  • See a generator as an investment like a vehicle. Would you purchase one at a supermarket? Simple reason why we say
NO! A generator is a moving part and requires maintenance and a warranty. Have you ever seen stock of spare parts and
service personnel operating and servicing generators in a supermarket bakery? This is one of the major reasons we have
not yet supplied to supermarkets or chain stores that does not specialize in electrical equipment. As they do not have the
    adequate backup support.
  • How far is your generator supplier from your premises? For when technical backup is required? Jetman has branches in
most major cities, and 60 agents’ countrywide.
  • Will there be spare parts? Jetman has been in close relationship with our spare parts suppliers for many years now. And has
collected a wide range of parts for all our models. VERY IMPORTANT-----Although another brand might look the same on
the outside. Not all the parts may work. We have seen this many times over the years trying to repair other brands for
clients. When the importer for some or other reason exported himself to another country. And the product cannot be
    repaired.
  • Make sure your supplier has the right information when supplying you with a generator. If wrong information is supplied just
to do a sale, you might end up buying the wrong size and will damage the generator or other expensive equipment, which is
not covered under warranty. All Jetman Dealerships undergo a strict training program that guides them through the technical
specifications. And if in doubt one of our highly qualified electrical or mechanical staff is there to assist at head office.
  • When purchasing a power plant for larger businesses make sure your supplier does either a full assessment or do a power
data log. This will save you from buying a too large generator. Which in the end will damage your engine. Simple
explanation. If one steps on a clutch of a vehicle and then take the fuel up to 6000RPM the engine will get damaged
because it is not taking any load on the engine. All engines are designed to operate under varying load, ranging from the
maximum down to the minimum. Problems occur when light loading (min load) is sustained for long periods of time resulting
in the engine not getting up to its normal temperature. Oil in the cylinder that is normally burnt is heated and a lacquer is
formed on the cylinder liner. If the light loading continues, visible blue smoke will appear and the engine will require service
work to deglaze the liner or replace it.
  • How long has your supplier been supplying generators? Will they still be in the market in time to come? Or will the same
thing happen, which happened in Cape Town 2005-2006. Many companies that do not specialize in Generators started
importing generators because they wanted to hit the get rich quick button. After the power came back on again they suffered
to sell their stock from their back yard, and had try and re export it. Today you can’t even call for backup. Jetman has started
business in 1997 and will continue to supply our products throughout South Africa and the rest of the world.
  • Make sure the engine HP or KW is enough to carry the load of the alternator. We have seen this many times as
manufacturers are trying to cut prices. The end story is a blown engine that could not handle the load.
  • REQUEST a LOCAL LOAD TEST REPORT. We offer state of the art load-bank facilities where each diesel standby
generator is tested in LOCAL conditions on each load step insuring that the generator is in perfect condition before delivery.
